Cycling Incidents 112: YJ63 YWP (Right Hook), GU58 DTK (Stupid Close Pass)
2021 - Video 032
Clip 1: YJ63 YWP, YJ63YWP, YJ63-YWP - Taxi rushing to next fare - had room but was still pretty inconsiderate... spooked me a little, I has to move out to make sure all was clear.
Clip 2: GU58 DTK, GU58DTK, GU58-DTK Just a daft as a brush pass really... there was room, but there's too much to consider and navigate here for it to be safe to squeeze through, and despite their being room - the driver just crawled by much too close.

    Anybody who shouts your on camera is a nonce Road positioning. When riding on the roads, there are two basic road positions you should adopt, depending on the situation. 1) Ride in the centre of your lane, to make yourself as clearly visible as possible, in the following situations on quiet roads or streets - if a faster vehicle comes up behind you, move to the left to enable them to overtake, if you can do so safely in slower-moving traffic - when the traffic around you starts to flow more freely, move over to the left if you can do so safely so that faster vehicles behind you can overtake at the approach to junctions or road narrowings where it would be unsafe for drivers to overtake you 2) When riding on busy roads, with vehicles moving faster than you, allow them to overtake where it is safe to do so whilst keeping at least 0.5 metres away, and further where it is safer, from the kerb edge. Remember that traffic on most dual carriageways moves quickly. Take extra care crossing slip roads.

    Your profanity is very understandable under these circumstances. If only the motorist had been able to see the reality of the situation, he'd not have passed you like he did and when he did. He'd also not have done a U turn to come back to confront you for no good reason. I fully support your stance here. I'm neither a motorist nor a cyclist on the road by the way.

      I get the lack of interest, if collectively you don't care for cyclists, then why waste your resources protecting them... but in the UK there is a process for identifying the drivers, via the registration plate... a notice of intent to prosecute is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle and they are asked to identify who was driving. If they fail to do this they end up with an automatic £800 charge, 6 points and the maximum penalty for the offence identified, where as if they just reply they usually get an FPN or sent on a days driving education at their own expense. Anyway, when it comes to processes and efficiency you guys are the masters, so whatever you're doing is probably the example the rest of the world should follow.

    Wowzers, I paused at the point he was passing, and I don't think there was even room for a cycle between the white line and the vehicle, nevermind an actual safe passing distance. Quite literally if you hadn't taken evasive action into the hatched area the vehicle would have struck your handlebars and with those large wheels also in shot it could have been catastrophic. I came here expecting a mildly close pass being blown out of proportion, and left wondering how anybody thinks they can defend that once they have seen the video.

I agree though that there are a lot of footage hunters out there, although it's not only the MAMILs. Plenty of motorists just as bad for it. I cycled for 5 years before it became a necessity to get a camera due to how much aggro I had started getting (from people with your warped and malevolent disposition I might add). Only 4 points? I am sure since update of Highway Code that driver should get a least 6 points (scale of between 3-9) and that's before going to court. He wanted to challenge it then I would hope given that he was in a massive lorry and the total lack of care and consideration a magistrate would then slap him with 9 points, plus fine, plus surcharge for wasting the court's time. I was lucky as when I moved of the light were just changing to green, but had they been green, I would have been cycling faster, and think it would have been a fatal accident I contacted thee taxi company and asked for a video apology, but the driver refused as he thinks he done nothing wrong. I even quoted the highway code, and why he was in the wrong. I asked a further two times for an apology, but he refused, and he was seeking legal advice We eventually ended up in court, and all my emails and video were presented to the court. We are far too lenient in this country with car drivers who endanger others be that Close passing, speeding or overtaking into path of oncoming vehicles all of which are well documented on cameras nowadays. Shame on the drivers involved, shame on the police who won’t do their job and the politicians who should be holding them accountable and shame on those individuals who try to excuse the behaviour of these drivers.

      Thanks mate. 🙏🏻 - I agree. The motorist who ended my cycling career in April 2021 (and subsequently pretty much ruined my life) also only got "without due care and attention" - even though they accelerated through 2 give ways into an active dual carriage way without making observations when they hit me. Two camera angles caught the incident... he was also heard by the camera repeatedly lying stating I had come off the footpath into his vehicle. He got 6 points and £500 fine (I got a caved in rib cage, punctured lung, torn aorta, haematoma's on my liver and spleen, a fractured arm which needed surgery and 18months of rehab, a heavy case of PTSD, developed a dependency on alcohol, became obese, became toxic to be around, my fiancee left me for another man, my children dislike me, I'm under-performing in my job... have no social life... and yeah... while I was in hospital this video was still drawing in trolls). Grim.

Maybe even put the driver out on a bike for a few months and see how he likes being on the receiving end. If I employed this guy, he'd be sacked on the spot.

    • @MiseEnZheng
      @MiseEnZheng Рік тому

      This was before the safer roads portal in west yorkshire, so I actually called the non-emergency line to report the incident. After describing what had happened to them they allocated me an police constable who I liaised with, they took a verbal witness report from me and reviewed the footage themselves, and as they saw me as the victim, they kept me updated with the prosecution. The police did state to me that they call the driver in for an interview, and that's usually enough, the driver is fully freaked out and then they're apologetic, so the police get back to the victim to see id the victim is happy to drop charges and let them off with a warning. My PC wanted this but said that my video footage didn't show any evidence of an offence, and that he was only sorry that I as a cyclist scared so easily, so the PC was as happy as I was to see him prosecuted at court (especially after saying the judge would "laugh the PC and Cyclist out of the court..." Guy was just an absolute piece of work.

    I realise I'm late to this but only just watched this video. I'd like to know how many of those incidents had action taken by the police? I record all my rides these days as far too many close passes happening. I send in anything too close to Operation Snap and so far out of about 12 sent in only 1 was deemed as a no action. If more cyclists recorded their rides then hopefully over time motorists will finally get message to leave sufficient safe space.

    • @MiseEnZheng
      @MiseEnZheng Рік тому

      Hi Steve. So when I first started running cameras in 2020, there was no easy way to submit digital evidence for a prosecution for the majority of cities/districts in West Yorkshire. As an area we were REALLY behind the times in that regard. Bradford did have Operation Steerside, which was an email inbox, I would host clips on a cloud and send them with all the required info and they almost always took action and updated me with outcomes etc - but if anything happened in Calderdale, Kirklees, Keighley or Leeds, then the only way to submit a report was to take the SD card from the camera and hand it in as evidence to a police station within 48 hours of the incident and complete a witness statement in person. Which I honestly didn't have time to do (worked full time and have 2 kids under 10). Later that year, and after a fair bit of lobbying by cyclists in the region, 'saferroads' was opened which was an online portal for submitting video evidence in West Yorkshire. I submitted my first red light runner in July 2020, and as of May 2022 I've submitted 329 reports in total. However, in April 2021 I sustained life altering trauma in a collision with a Toyota Hilux (compensation case still ongoing). So I no longer cycle, my town has a pedestrian refuge/traffic island that frequently gets abused by people going the wrong way around it, so when in passing I'd sometimes film folk committing this offence and send it in. While I don't truly believe catching folk in the wrong will truly change bad behaviours/road use, It does feel like some scale of justice is being restored for me if I do get a result... and if it makes one person drive more considerately, down the road that could be a life saved.
